It was designed to replace the outdated RPD and provide infantry fire support with the same logic as assault rifles - simple, durable and reliable. The RPK was a standard issue weapon for the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact countries for a long time and is still in use by many armed forces and rebel groups around the world.
